Virtual Event
Immigration clients may rightfully focus on the requirements to secure,
renew, and/or change their US immigrations visas and status. But, they may
not be aware of the complexities and unintended consequences they may also face
with respect to their US tax obligations when they secure visas, change status,
or properly travel or work abroad pursuant to such visas.
Failures to comply with tax laws can have serious consequences and may even
have unintended adverse consequences regarding their future immigration
applications. As immigration attorneys, it is important to understand the
fundamentals of US tax law so that we can flag these various issues for clients,
make appropriate referrals, and help our clients understand their need to
properly comply with all applicable tax laws.
This session will cover the relevant tax law basics,
how changes in immigration status affect taxes, and the critical nature of tax
compliance including the tax implications involved in F-1, L-1, H-1B visas,
Green Cards, physical presence/tax residency tests, expatriation risks, and
more.
