If that sounds like you, we invite you to take part in the HCBA Institute for Leadership in the Legal Profession (ILLP). This innovative and transformative five-session training program is designed to help you achieve the next leadership level in your legal career. ILLP was created to be comprehensive, holistic, and relevant to legal professionals in a variety of practice areas, organizational settings, and roles. Over the course of the sessions, we explore self-leadership and awareness, leading others, and leading within an organization.

Built specifically for lawyers by lawyers, ILLP prepares participants from all levels of their organizations to lead during a time of great change within the legal profession.
The curriculum of the Institute is divided into three core areas: (1) individual leadership strengths, styles, and self-awareness; (2) leading groups and teams; and, finally, (3) organizational leadership with a cohort model being central to the program. Participants form lasting professional relationships over the course of the program. Respected and experienced leaders, teachers, and experts present on their areas of leadership expertise. Participants also learn what not to do as a leader by considering cautionary tales of leaders and organizations.
The 2023 Institute begins on February 15, 2023, and will be held for five sessions on alternate Wednesday afternoons.
The 2023 Institute begins on February 15, 2023, and will be held for five sessions on alternate Wednesday afternoons. The first, third, and final sessions will be held in-person at the HCBA offices in downtown Minneapolis. The second and fourth sessions will be held virtually. This hybrid approach will foster the deep connections of the cohort and allow for meaningful conversations while balancing the efficiencies of remote learning. Due to the cohort model and the close professional relationships developed during the program, participation is capped to allow for meaningful group interaction and individualized learning.
When the program was originally conceived, the focus was on attorneys working in law firms. Over the years, it became clear that the content of the program would also benefit leaders in legal services organizations, in-house corporate departments, nonprofit organizations, the public sector, and governmental entities as well. For that reason, beginning with the 2021 cohort, the Institute invited participants from a variety of professional settings. Many Institute graduates have gone on to lead their organizations at high levels, and several of those leaders returned to serve on the Institute’s planning committee.
Many past participants have credited the Institute and their participation in the program as a game-changer in their leadership development.
