The Chevron doctrine is an administrative law principle
that says federal courts should defer to a federal agency’s reasonable
interpretation of an ambiguous or unclear statute that Congress delegated to the
agency to administer. In recent years, it has been under attack as part of
the pushback against the so-called administrative state. In its current session,
the US Supreme court will hear two cases concerning Chevron. We will have
assembled a distinguished panel who will discuss the history of Chevron, its
importance to environmental regulation, the Supreme Court challenges and the
potential aftermath should Chevron be overturned.
