The new Hospital Presumptive Eligibility and Uninsured
Discount Law will take effect November 1, 2023. Its provisions are reminiscent
of the Attorney General Agreement requirements, but with some new
twists.
In this session we will review the requirements of the
new law, including:
When is a hospital required to screen
a patient for charity care eligibility? All patients?
What must a hospital do to determine
eligibility?
What can a hospital NOT do until
eligibility is determined?
What new steps are hospitals required
to take prior to referring medical debt to a debt collection agency or bringing
an action for collection, including garnishment?
How do hospitals calculate the new
uninsured discount required to be provided to patients? Who is eligible
for the new uninsured discount?
NOTE: This session is also intended
to be a venue for participant dialog. We will encourage folks working with
hospitals to share their interpretations of questions related to the new law.
