The first
hour will highlight the Veterans Restorative Justice Act (VRJA). Passed in 2021,
the VRJA is the result of a collaboration between prosecutors, defense
attorneys, social workers, and the state and federal Veterans Affairs agencies
that created a specialized sentencing structure for veterans who committed
criminal offenses as the result of a service-connected condition. Eligible
veterans are given the opportunity to avoid jail time and a criminal conviction
if they complete all recommended treatment and abide by other conditions ordered
by the court.
The second hour of the program
will be a briefing on legislative updates on issues related to, and affecting,
servicemembers, veterans, and their families.
