Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
What diversity, equity and inclusion goals did the Section include in the 2021-2022 work plan, how did you approach these goals, and what was the result?
- We made efforts to recruit members from underrepresented backgrounds identified in our DEI plan using our personal and professional networks. We recruited to our governing council one governmental attorney who is new to the council, as well as an attorney who works at legal aid with historically underrepresented clients.
- Our CLEs were free and accessible through Zoom, as fees and in-person attendance can be a barrier to inclusion. We did not collect demographic or geographical data, but our CLEs were more accessible than in years past for these reasons.
- We have made efforts to keep our section and attendance fees as low as possible to accommodate new lawyers.
- We strive to incorporate topics of equity and inclusion into our programming. For example, our CLE focusing on administrative rulemaking focused on ways that rulemaking hearings can be more inclusive due to pandemic-related technology changes. Next year we plan to host a CLE about Tribal Law/Courts and Administrative Law.
- We sponsor the Beck Fellowship, which strives to fund students from diverse backgrounds to get legal experience at the Minnesota Office of Administrative Hearings.
Continue working towards the DEI plan goals:
Goal 1 – Recruitment: Purposefully attract, include, retain, and promote members from backgrounds that are currently underrepresented in our Section, including non-metro practitioners, new lawyers, people of color, and governmental attorneys. This also includes recruitment for positions of leadership in the Section from diverse backgrounds.
Goal 2 – Inclusion: Purposefully finding ways to ensure that our members, particularly those from groups currently underrepresented in our Section, are included in leadership, planning, activities, and programming. Providing a welcoming environment for our Members, especially new members, which acknowledges the barriers to participation often faced by underrepresented groups.
Goal 3 – Voicing a Continued Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion: Fostering an understanding of, and commitment to, diversity within the MSBA, its membership, Minnesota law schools, and the legal profession in Minnesota by presenting, coordinating, and co-sponsoring CLEs and other trainings related to administrative law and the importance of diversity and inclusion in the legal profession
Other Section Accomplishments
Beck Fellowship: Our section funds the Beck Fellowship, which offers valuable legal experience to law students at the Office of Administrative Hearings. Students receive a stipend of $2,000 and are paid hourly by the Office of Administrative Hearings. This year the Health Law Section donated $1,500 toward the fellowship.
Minnesota Administrative Procedure (the Beck Book): Our section is collaborating with Mitchell-Hamline School of Law to update Minnesota Administrative Procedure, a free, online administrative law treatise that was last updated in 2015.
Volunteer Lawyers Network’s Volunteer Attorney Manual – Our section has been partnering with VLN to update their volunteer attorney manual for administrative appeals.
