Program Description:
Community decision-making and
peacebuilding efforts around the globe have been and continue to be affected by
trauma thus necessitating a trauma-informed approach to conflict resolution,
breaking recurrent cycles of violence, and fostering the trust and collaboration
required for sustainable project outcomes and stable societies. Trauma may
result from people’s actions or natural disasters, causing neurological changes
that spontaneously overwhelm rational thoughts as much as decades later. The
impact of traumatic experiences may also be passed to future generations who
were not directly exposed. Such collective trauma can affect large swaths of
society; it manifests differently, can harden into a divided, volatile state,
and requires a complex response. To do no harm, peacebuilders have an ethical
responsibility to be alert to the possibility of trauma exposure and adapt
interventions to address its effects.
