Advocacy for the Profession

Amicus Briefs

The MSBA files amicus briefs with the courts on selected issues. Sections and committees must follow procedures under our Bylaws before submitting an amicus brief.

Court Rules

The MSBA petitions the Minnesota Supreme Court for rule changes and submits comments on proposed rule changes. Sometimes comments are submitted to court-related entities such as the Board of Law Examiners, the Board of Continuing Legal Education, and the Court’s various Rules Advisory Committees.

The Minnesota Supreme Court issued an Order granting the MSBA’s petition requesting changes to the Rules of Lawyer Registration. The petition asked that attorneys be required to report the number of pro bono hours they complete each year, and whether they made any financial contributions to a legal services program serving low-income people. Beginning January 1, 2022, these questions will be part of the form attorneys complete when they renew their license. Click here for more details and FAQ.

Legislation

The MSBA is the collective voice of the legal profession at the Minnesota Capitol, advocating for a strong justice system and statutory improvements. Read our 2022 MSBA Legislative Blueprint that explains our lobbying priorities and other legislative positions. Keep informed throughout the legislative session via Capitol Connection, our weekly member e-newsletter sent every Friday.
