The MSBA Civil Litigation Section is pleased to announce
that it is sponsoring a new pro bono program in collaboration with the Tubman
Pro Bono Safety
Project.
The
Safety Project provides high quality pro bono representation to
low-income domestic violence victim survivors seeking civil Orders for Protection who have
a compelling
need
for legal assistance. Tubman staff will provide volunteer attorneys with training,
case information, and legal support in Hennepin, Ramsey, and
Washington counties. The MSBA Civil Litigation Section hopes to recruit volunteer lawyers*, both experienced and
inexperienced, to team up to provide legal representation to
Tubman clients.
This
program has been designed to achieve three goals:
• PRO BONO -- Recruitment,
training, assignment and retention of volunteer attorneys to represent Tubman
clients in Order for Protection/Harassment Restraining Order hearings.
• MENTORSHIP – Pairing and connecting volunteer lawyers, to mentor each
other through their representation of Tubman clients.
• CIVIL
LITIGATION SKILL DEVELOPMENT – Volunteer lawyers will develop client counseling,
trial preparation, negotiation and trial skills through their representation
of Tubman clients.
*Are you a law student interested
in gaining experience? Tubman routinely supervises certified student attorney
law clerks. If you are a law student interested in the program but do not
already have a supervising attorney identified, Tubman can help you find a
supervisor after you've taken the training.
