Join the Civil Litigation Section for its Annual meeting, CLE and Advocate Award celebration. The event is open to all (Civil Litigation Section members attend free) and provides an opportunity to hear from your colleagues, celebrate the Advocate Award recipient and hear from Judge Pamela Alexander (ret.), the first female Black judge in Minnesota.

Judge Pamela Alexander (ret.) | "Is the Justice System Just?"

The Honorable Pamela Alexander grew up in South Minneapolis and graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School. She began her legal career as a criminal defense attorney with the Legal Rights Center and then moved to the Hennepin County Attorney’s office as a prosecutor in the Criminal Division. In 1983, she became a Hennepin County District Court Judge where she presided over the Juvenile Division and served as Assistant Chief Judge for the Fourth Judicial District Court. She served as the President of the Council on Crime and Justice and she has served on many community boards and committees including The Minneapolis Foundation Board of Trustees, the Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, the Children’s Defense Fund, and the Juvenile Judges Leadership Council, and has been awarded numerous community service awards ranging from the University of St. Thomas School of Law Dean’s Award for Outstanding Teaching to the NAACP Profiles in Courage Award.

3:40 p.m. - Presentation of Advocate Award to Kim Allen Pennington (by MSBA President Dyan Ebert)
3:45 p.m. - Keynote Speaker Judge Pamela Alexander (ret.) | "Is the Justice System Just?"

This CLE presentation is entirely focused on educating lawyers about the barriers, including attorney bias and specific laws, that people of color face when they are a part of the legal system. This presentation will also cover the Minnesota Supreme Court Race Bias Task Force Report, spending time on why it was necessary and how it has been implemented to date. In discussing the specific laws that have heavily impacted race over time in addition to the Race Bias Task Force report, the presentation will be able to provide strategies that help attorneys overcome their own bias as well as the bias that plays out in the legal system.
