More detail on the MSBA's Nov 5 tech conference

by Joe Kaczrowski | Oct 05, 2015

Fall is in the air and there's less than a month remaining before the MSBA's tech conference in Lakeville on November 5. The schedule for the day is now set, CLE credit has been applied for (including 3 ethics and 1 EOB), and registration remains open ($65 for members, $25 for law students).

After a short welcome from MSBA president Mike Unger, the day begins with a talk from Casey Flaherty, who will talk about lawyers' evolving ethical duty of technological competence. Casey is a former in-house counsel who developed the Legal Tech Audit to help in-house counsel evaluate their options for outside counsel but also to help attorneys improve efficiency and reduce costs. The LTA tests proficiency on basic software within a standard legal workflow, and focuses on achieving specific outcomes rather than completing a certain number of training hours.

After a short break, the day continues with a talk by Nerino Petro, who wears a number of hats including CIO for Holmstrom & Kennedy. Nerino is the Technology Editor for the ABA Solo, Small Firm & GP Division GP|Solo Magazine, and he will be discussing issues relating to a mobile law practice, such as balancing security and accessibility, and how tools like Citrix ShareFile strive to help lawyers find this elusive middle ground.

The next speaker is Todd Scott of Minnesota Lawyers Mutual, who will continue the ethics trend by discussing challenges face with technology under the Model Rules. Todd is a frequent author and guest lecturer on the topics of malpractice, ethics, and practice management systems. Todd's presentation will explore the new basic level of technological competence for lawyers, and their duties and obligations with various technological developments like cloud computing and email security.

After lunch, which is included in the price of admission, the day moves on to a talk from John Federico of Affinity Consulting Group who will explain how lawyers can use technology to leverage intellectual capital within the practice, looking at tools like HotDocs, for example. Among other benefits to the use of document templates and automation, John will explain how these tools and practices can help lawyers prevent malpractice, increase profitability and are a primary method for transferring knowledge to others in their firms.

After another short break, the substantive portion of the conference wraps up with a talk by the Honorable Peter Reyes of the Minnesota Court of Appeals. Judge Reyes will explore the impact of technology on issues of diversity and inclusion within the legal profession, including improvements with access to justice and legal education. Judge Reyes was a partner in the Intellectual Property Department at the law firm of Barnes & Thornburg and also worked as a Senior IP Lawyer at Cargill. He is also active in a number of local, state and national bar associations.

The conference wraps up with a social hour that offers an opportunity to mingle with fellow attendees, interact with the presenters, and learn more about practice tools and resources available through the MSBA and its partners. Also be sure to check out the conference webpage to access a number of supplemental materials, including whitepapers, guides, how-to manuals, and more.
